Description
My friends asked me to visit their condo daily in Cocoa Village while they were on vacation to care for their cat and dog. They lived on the eleventh floor overlooking the Indian River. They had a wrap-around balcony with plenty of room. I set up my easel on the north side overlooking the boat slips. Off in the distance, I could see the Barnett bridge crossing the River on US528. On the right side of the bridge further off in the distance, the NASA VAB, Vehicle Assembly Building at Kennedy Space Center, is visible. My own house is on the right side of the bridge on Merritt Island.
One of the largest buildings in the world by area, the VAB covers eight acres, is 525 feet tall and 518 feet wide. It is made up of 65,000 cubic yards of concrete and its frame is constructed from 98,590 tons of steel. It stands atop a support base of 4,225 steel pilings driven 164 feet into bedrock.
The Vehicle (originally Vertical) Assembly Building, or VAB, at NASA's Kennedy Space Center (KSC) is a building designed to assemble large space vehicles, such as the massive Saturn V and the Space Shuttle. The future Space Launch System (SLS) will also be assembled there.
Using oil paints and a 24 inch by 30 inch stretched canvas I quickly began my plein air painting. As I painted, the wind began to quicken. The clouds began to mass and grow darker. I was in the mood and didn't want to stop my progress. I was rather pleased that the sky was becoming more interesting.
Suddenly the rain pounded down upon me and the wind blew my easel, and painting over. Several potted plants also blew over. Sigh...I had to stop and clean up quite a big mess! This is the result of my efforts that day. Despite the sudden ending of my painting session, it was all quite therapeutic.
