Description
I have been driving by this beautiful little farm for over thirty years. It is less than a quarter mile from my home. I noticed some recent changes there. I decided a few days ago to see what was going on. I drove out on the little dirt road towards the Indian River. A farmer driving a tractor approached me. I asked him if it was allowable for me to do some photography and plein painting there. He was friendly and happily gave me permission.
I got my acrylic paints, French easel, brushes and all that I needed to do a painting from the back of my van. I put some water in a plastic container and set out some paints on a pallet. I placed a 20 inch by 16 inch canvas on the easel. Sitting in the tailgate of the van at times and standing at times, I quickly painted.
While I was painting, I foolishly stood in a fire ant hill. Ouch! I didn't notice them right away until they had chewed up my foot and lower leg pretty badly. Before I could get much further on the painting, mosquitoes decided to add more injuries as they lit upon my arms. Ouch again! I applied some bug repellent and continued without any more insect problems.
While I was engrossed in the painting, several people arrived and parked near me. I tried to not pay attention to them as I quietly painted. Unfortunately, much to my surprise, they began to cut off some of the flower heads! Many of the flowers were huge being more than a foot wide. They looked heavy. I guess that they didn't have permission to harvest the flowers. The farmer asked them to stop messing with the flowers and asked them to leave.
I didn't pay much attention as I was more interested in trying to get the painting done before the light changed too much. After all the Tom-foolery, I kinda lost my momentum. The breeze was picking up and the light was changing. I had been painting only for a couple hours but I decided to call it quits for the day. I went back for a few more minutes yesterday and added a few more details to the painting.
It occurred to me that I was channeling Vincent Van Gogh. He painted a lot of sunflowers and a lot of farm fields. He did most of them plein air. I coincidentally share his birthday. I am exactly one hundred years to the day younger than he. I find pleasure in that notion. As always...getting out in the sunshine made me feel invigorated and relaxed. Although, it was technically winter, it was a beautiful warm balmy day in the 80 degrees.
This property has the oldest house built on Merritt Island, This is a National Register Property left to a not for profit foundation by the last member of the original homesteading family. The homestead document was signed by President Chester Arthur. The grove has produced citrus for over 126 years, and will continue to do so under the terms of the foundation created by Alma Clyde Field in 1998.
