I Love how you captured the classic “squirrel pose” of clutching their hands at their heart…listening ..in that mix of fear and curiosity. WONDERful,…our guys are running burying acorns everywhere …including in our courtyard rimmed herb and annual flower wall….we pull maple and oak sproutings every Spring!

AnnaJo Vahle replied:

They are fun little critters to watch, aren't they? They plant trees around your property...very cute. I bet that your squirrels have bushier tails. Ours are a bit scrawny. Still cute.

Artist's Description

Okay....I already posted the photograph I took of this little guy. I couldn't resist and just had to try my hand at doing a painting of him, too. I heavily referenced the aforementioned photo, which I had taken at a park on Merritt Island. I changed the background from a sidewalk to grass. I wasn't in the mood to paint so much gray as in the gray of the sidewalk and the squirrel I removed much of the tree litter in the background. I wanted it to be all about the acorn. I hoped to express his indecission about retrieving his acorn. We looked at each other for quite a long time before he finally grabbed the precious acorn and scurrying up a tree.
Although, he is an eastern gray squirrel, I noticed that he had quite a bit of rusty orange colorations. Using my artistic license, I slightly exaggerated the orange and the blue/gray fur. Upon careful examination, I noticed that he had little dark beauty spots on his chest, too.
Gray squirrels feed on a...

About AnnaJo Vahle

AnnaJo Vahle

Although born in upstate New York, I grew up mostly in Nevada and California. The fabulous panoramic views of the far west inspired me to begin painting and photographing it’s beauty. I’ve lived in various areas in the states and in Europe but always had the desire to express through painting and photography. While living in the Mediterranean, I was especially influenced by the great Renaissance art and the chiaroscuro work of Caravaggio. I began with oils, worked with a wide variety of mediums but now mostly work in acrylic, oils, and photography. I studied mostly engineering in college but ended up with a degree in Technical Illustration, one in Psychology after several moves and colleges, one in Art Education. My experience as a...
