The Cat and the Snake
My little tabby cat loves to guard the house. One of her favorite places to be is on the front porch. This way she can watch the birds, squirrels and other critters out doors. This is better than doing it from a window sill, in her opinion. Occassionally, unfortunate lizards, snakes or bugs manage to get past the screen door. Still not sure how this is done. However, with my trusty guard cat, she jumps to work.
As you can see by this photo, a beautiful little red snake has intruded upon the porch. I think that it is a young rat or corn snake. Saphira is a well-fed cat. She rarely kills anything, but she does enjoy intimadating and playing with them for awhile. The snake gave it a pretty good effort. However it had to play dead a few times to get a break from my feisty kitty. My son and I watched carefully, to make sure that no-one was really hurt. Saphira didn't even have her claws drawn. Had she been serious, she would have been all claws and teeth. It was fun to see Saphira have a nice playmate for a little bit. When she grew bored of the sport, we gently picked up the snake and let it out on the front lawn. The crimson little critter slithered off into the dark. Neither one had been hurt. I suspect that Saphira enjoyed the sport much more than the snake. I know that my household always feels safe knowing that we have such a wonderful guard. Who needs to have a dog?

Awesome story, and awesome capture AnnaJo. I am a cat lover as well. People do not realize how much they are capable of and that they truly have a 6th sense. Very amazing pets. This is a great scene. She definitely does not look scared or intimidated. Looks playful, at the same time protecting your house. Love it. Added to my favorites and just tweeted. L/F/T.

Wow, fantastic action capture. What a great image, so cute. The snake looks a little intimidated. L/F
AnnaJo Vahle replied:
Thank you, Rosalie. Yes, the snake did seem frightened. I was pleased that Saphira was gentle.

Great capture on your part!!!!! Excellent timing!!! I will say we get a lot of snakes around here, too ... found one in our entry hall a few summers back (not a clue how that happened!) ... and I'm good at getting them back to wherever they ought to be (rather than my front hall or our swimming pool, for example) ... but I am pretty careful about any of the ones with pretty designs. I don't mess with them!!!
AnnaJo Vahle replied:
It is odd how they can get past the front door, isn't it, Lois. Yes, this was a pretty little guy. You are quite right. Should be careful. Perhaps silly on my part…but it didn't look like a dangerous one.

Aww!! What a wonderful shot and story!! :-) I am glad to hear that someone else has enough sense to let the little snake go and not kill it just because it is a snake. Many people don't understand how beneficial having a harmless snake in the yard can be!! :-)
