Description
This is the second building of a two-building complex called the Universal Healing Center and Chapel. It is on Merritt Island near the Indian River. The other building was burned. Both building have apparently been abandoned and are for sale.
I, also, painted this building on location. It took me three afternoons of about a couple hours, each to paint this. Although, this building doesn't seem to have been burned, it is certainly in a state of disrepair. There are no interior walls. All windows are empty. The ceiling is falling in. The cross seems to be twisted on it's base.
The second day I worked on this painting, a young man came through and told me that he was an artist. He told me that he was going to paint this site, too. I smiled and continued to work on my canvas from the tailgate of my van. A few minutes later, I heard a strange sound coming from the backside of the adjoining building. I couldn't see what it was but I could smell the scent of spray paint.
Minutes later, policemen came by and questioned me. The three policemen went around the back of the building to talk to the artist. I wasn't privy to their conversation, but I did notice that they all left separately at about the same time.
On the last two days of my painting, a pair of doves came to me and scurried around my feet. They seemed unafraid of me. I thought that it was interesting that while I painted the first building, it had vultures and while I painted this one, doves were present. I included the birds as I saw them in each painting.
I noticed that the trees and foliage was untended. Weeds were growing throughout. Spanish moss draped from a tree behind the chapel. It is summer and the days were hot and humid. Each afternoon, the clouds developed and brought rain. Each day, my painting session was ended in this way.
I am not sure what compelled me to paint this Center. It seems full of symbolism. Both buildings had a tall cross atop their roofs. Both buildings were broken down or burned down. One had a sky full of vultures and the other had a pair of doves in the foreground. All is dilapidated. It is being defaced by graffiti. Flowers and trees grow from what once must have been beautiful grounds. It has a natural untended sense of nature reclaiming the grounds.

I like that you painted this on site, and know from experience how one often has to go to the location repeatedly to capture the lighting. Beautiful painting! vote/like
AnnaJo Vahle replied:
Thank you very much, Anne. You are quite right about having to return to get the lighting right.

This painting is memory-sparking. Does anyone know where I can find a website or newspaper on what happened to the building? Or are there any pictures of it before it was destroyed? I would love to see.
AnnaJo Vahle replied:
Thank you very much, Angela. I am sorry that I don't know much more than I wrote in the description. I was able to google it and found a youtube video of a couple of young men walking through it. I think that I also found an article about it in the Florida Today paper, which can be found on Google. It is located off Tropical Trail on Merritt Island just north of SR520 near the Hubert Humphrey bridge.
