Description
The Space Shuttle Challenger disaster occurred on January 28, 1986 as my young sons witnessed it from their Merritt Island backyard just a few miles away. My painting depicts the event 70 seconds after the launch, three seconds before the shuttle broke apart. I wanted the focus to be of the hope and dreams rather than the disintegration of so much. This is one of my more complicated compositions. The space shuttle launch is the subject. My two young sons are looking up at it from their perches on the slide in the backyard. The lines of the slide intensify the direction that the viewer should follow...up to the launch in the sky. I put a fence to give the eye a non-cluttered area to rest while the viewer studies the painting. I used the colors, red, white and blue to indicate the American scene. I took out elements of the playground swing set because they overcomplicated the scene and because they confused the focus that the viewer should be following. I painted the jackets to look a bit like the materials used in space suits. I used strong vibrant colors to make sure that one could see that they were important. Although this was a painting about a tragedy, I wanted it to be about the hope of dreams working out. This is about the hard work and tenacity of those trying to find a way to improve our lives and explore space.

A work of sheer genius, AnnaJo … saw this in the "Anything Goes" contest and it was the colors and the fabulous light and texture on the jackets that you painted that caught my eye. But just as you planned, my eyes went up to the shuttle .. then I saw the title …then read your beautiful description and it all fell into place. You accomplished everything you planned. Absolute genius. A magnificent tribute … and one that goes right to the heart. l/f t p fb

Dear AnnaJo, I love that you addressed the importance of: redefining one’s reference by choosing different materials and textures, by de-cluttering, by being mindful of directing the viewer’s eye “to travel within” when composing an image. I also love the explanation of “the Golden mean” and how the other elements of colour palette, hue and value also influence overall design and composition. No wonder your work is always EXCITING, Engaging and Beautiful and so appealing. Thank you for your ongoing significant contributions to both the contest exhibit and this blog discussion. SO grateful, AnnaJo!

Intriguing capture of a rare moment! And it also reminds us that it does get chilly in mid-peninsular Florida, even when flowers are blooming. It must have been a fascinating place to live! l/f
AnnaJo Vahle replied:
Thank you, Dorothy. It does, indeed get cold on occasion. That was the cause of the explosion that horrible day.
