Description
This is the first time in more than a year that I painted en plein air. I have been incredibly ill with my multiple sclerosis. For this reason, I couldn't get out and do much. I have been misdiagnosed for decades. Now that I have been properly diagnosed, I am on medication. This has helped to ease my symptoms and slow the progress of the disease. It is a bumpy ride, still. I am never without symptoms.
We had such beautiful weather in the mid 80's. I decided that it would be nice to paint at Sam's house. It was the last place I had done a plein air painting. Conveniently close to my house and with plenty of nice amenities, it is a great location.
Sams' House is part of the Pine Island Conservation area. It consists of 1000 acres on Merritt Island. This special area encompasses pine flat woods, cabbage palm hammocks, hardwood hammocks, mangrove forests, and salt marshes. An archeological study of Pine Island has identified two historic houses, a prehistoric Native American village, and a fossil site. The two historic homes were built by the Sams family, one of the earliest settlers on Merritt Island. These homes have now been restored. Dishes, bottle fragment, square nails and animal bones have been found around the homes dating back from the 1880s.
As I sat in the back of my van, I painted this scene of an ancient oak tree surrounded by other trees. A narrow path runs beneath it to a sacred Indian Burial mound. The path is lined by carefully placed rocks. I used acrylic paint on a 16 by 20 inch canvas. As I painted, squirrels munched on acorns and hickory nuts in the trees around me. A gopher turtle strolled by. I left out some of the trees and simplified the composition. It was the experience more than the accuracy of the painting that was my primary focus. The peace, fresh air, and sun helped me immensely physically and emotionally. It was all very soothing.
