Artist's Description
My mother and I used to spend a lot of time at Biscayne Bay. She had a home a couple miles away from there. We walked her dog along the beach. We took boat rides, on occasion. Sometimes, we had a picnics there. My sons loved to swim there as small children. I have so many memories....mostly happy ones of that lovely place.
When she was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer, I moved into her home and took care of her. When she could, we took walks at Biscayne Bay still. When she couldn't walk anymore, we would take slow drives around there. She often sat and watched me paint. As I painted this one en plein air, I felt sad and lonely. I believe that it might show in the lone mangrove tree. I hoped to show strength and beauty, too. Mangrove trees are sometimes called "walking trees" because of the way that they grow their roots laterally. Many of the islands in this area are formed by mangrove trees. Debris collects in their roots. Other trees surround them. S...
About AnnaJo Vahle
Although born in upstate New York, I grew up mostly in Nevada and California. The fabulous panoramic views of the far west inspired me to begin painting and photographing itās beauty. I began with oils, worked with a wide variety of mediums but now mostly work in acrylic, oils, and photography. I studied mostly engineering in college but ended up with a degree in Technical Illustration, one in Psychology after several moves and colleges, one in Art Education. My experience as a...

Wow! Absolutely beautiful. To me the lone tree also symbolizes the isolation and loneliness felt by those who are suffering from a potentially fatal illness. As one gets older, the loss of dear friends and family members makes this stage of life so sad at times.
AnnaJo Vahle replied:
Yes...I agree with you, Elizabeth. It is true for so many especially these days.
