This is the second of the two still life paintings I did this weekend. Since it was still raining, I couldn't go outside. Again, I set up a still life by the window. The light was not bright since it was raining. At first, I only used one avocado and a couple onions. I painted them against a really dark blue background. I wanted it to be dramatic but it looked awful. It was harsh. The composition wasn't good, either. The background needed some height. I couldn't find anything suitable, so I placed another avocado in the background. After painting that in, I decided that it needed more interest in the foreground. I couldn't find much of anything that was small enough not to obscure the background. Got an egg from the refrigerator. It was a fun exercise to paint but I am not sure that it really worked. I added the onion skins for a little more interest. Hmmmm...not exciting. I warmed the background and foreground. By now, I was fighting with my new slow-drying acrylics....
Although born in upstate New York, I grew up mostly in Nevada and California. The fabulous panoramic views of the far west inspired me to begin painting and photographing it’s beauty. I’ve lived in various areas in the states and in Europe but always had the desire to express through painting and photography. While living in the Mediterranean, I was especially influenced by the great Renaissance art and the chiaroscuro work of Caravaggio. I began with oils, worked with a wide variety of mediums but now mostly work in acrylic, oils, and photography. I studied mostly engineering in college but ended up with a degree in Technical Illustration, one in Psychology after several moves and colleges, one in Art Education. My experience as a...
