Artist's Description
A great blue heron is out in the Merritt Island wetlands looking for a meal. He looks up just as an osprey flies overhead with a fresh fish. Both birds eat fish.
This is an imaginary scene. I began this painting of a Florida wetland area. It seemed to need some life. I added the heron. I thought that it would be fun to add an osprey. To that, I added a fish in it it's tallons.
Ospreys are also called fish hawk, large, long-winged hawk, that lives along seacoasts and larger interior waterways, where it catches fish. It is brown above and white below, with some white on the head.
Ospreys fly over the water to hunt. It hovers above its prey and then plunges feet first to seize a fish in its long, curved talons. With a grip secured by sharp spicules on the underside of the toes, the bird carries its prey to a favourite perch to feed.

About AnnaJo Vahle
Although born in upstate New York, I grew up mostly in Nevada and California. The fabulous panoramic views of the far west inspired me to begin painting and photographing it’s beauty. I’ve lived in various areas in the states and in Europe but always had the desire to express through painting and photography. While living in the Mediterranean, I was especially influenced by the great Renaissance art and the chiaroscuro work of Caravaggio. I began with oils, worked with a wide variety of mediums but now mostly work in acrylic, oils, and photography.
