Description
This is an acrylic portrait of my late husband. He served in the United States Navy for nearly 30 years. He was covered with all kinds of tattoos. I didn't paint all of them. Some of them reflect memories of where he traveled or served. Some of them are pretty silly. For instance, the “Hey you” and “Who me?” cartoons on his chest are quite goofy. He got all of them long before I met him. The masted ship in the middle of his chest seems so typical of a sailor.
He didn't usually have a beard. He did for a few months when I painted this portrait. He was a regular reader. I painted him sitting in front of some of my books, a favorite place of his. He was reading as I painted. It was a bit fun to show the book cover of the dictionary as a beat up mess. It was obviously a well-used book in our home.
I mostly painted this as he “posed” for me. Just as I was engrossed in my painting, he was engrossed in his reading. Despite the many details involved in this composition, it went relatively quickly. It was a pretty easy subject. As always, when I paint in acrylic. I have to consider that I will likely paint in many layers. That is my way of overcoming the blending difficulties of a fast drying paint.

Such a touching portrait, for many reasons. Especially now that I read your description. I am sorry for your loss. Through your wonderful talent to paint, your love for your late husband is evident and keeps his memory alive for years to come. I love the detail in this painting and could look on at it for quite a while. Love the books and how some of them lean. And I love the print on the page of the book that he is reading. But I must say, for me, when I first saw this painting, the song "Son of a son of a Sailor, popped into my head! Do you know it? By the late Jimmy Buffett! Your husband even resembles Jimmy a bit. : ) L/F/V
