Description
The Cosmic Owl...Playing with my paints a bit, I came up with this. I didn't really know where I was going when I started laying in the abstract background. Once it was dry, I just studied what I had and decided that it looked like a good place for an owl. After looking through some photographs of owls that I had taken, this one seemed to fit. It is based on one that I took at my son's home in Orlando. It was living in his backyard in a big old oak tree. I simply started painting without a sketch or drawing. At first, the head appeared and then the tail. That's right, I skipped the middle so for an afternoon, it was kinda transparent looking, almost like a mirage. I have been trying to make sense of some things that I am coping with and this is art therapy for me.
My younger son, watched as it seemed to evolve out of the purple and greenish abstract haze of a background. He said that it reminded him of an owl in a cartoon show called, "Adventure Time." The character is known as the Cosmic Owl. In the style of native American legends, the Cosmic Owl's appearance in a dream signifies and validates that dream as a true premonition. It seems to be directly connected to the forces of the universe. He said that the eyes seem to show no emotion but do show wisdom and great power just like the Cosmic Owl.

Wonderful work :) I thought it was called Cosmic Owl because it looks like it has the night sky and stars in its eyes! Here in New Zealand the native owl we call the morepork (Māori name ruru) is sometimes viewed as the ancestral spirit guardian of a family and can advise and protect. We only have the one native owl here.

Thank you, Nimros. Fascinating information about the owl in New Zealand. I guess owls, all around the world, are considered "wise."
