Artist's Description
I was out at Sams House Nature Center again today. Instead of painting one of the houses or oak trees, I began one of an ancient hickory tree. It has an unusual shape with a hollow area in the middle of the bottom. It has intrigued me since I saw it for the first time.
I noticed that it had a different texture than the oaks. Different colors, too. It is a much paler color, almost like a light gray. I could see turquoise in some of the leaves if I looked closely. The gnarled hole was a weird thing for me. I wonder if it had another large tree like limb that fell off and left this hole? I wondered how it happened.
It was a gray rainy day. The light was a bit tricky. As I painted today from the back of my van, a large gopher turtle strolled by. Squirrels kept munching and crunching on acorns loudly in front of me and above me. Pieces of acorns kept falling like snow in front of me from the branches above my head. It was a comfortable, albeit odd, phenomen...
About AnnaJo Vahle
Although born in upstate New York, I grew up mostly in Nevada and California. The fabulous panoramic views of the far west inspired me to begin painting and photographing it’s beauty. I’ve lived in various areas in the states and in Europe but always had the desire to express through painting and photography. While living in the Mediterranean, I was especially influenced by the great Renaissance art and the chiaroscuro work of Caravaggio. I began with oils, worked with a wide variety of mediums but now mostly work in acrylic, oils, and photography. I studied mostly engineering in college but ended up with a degree in Technical Illustration, one in Psychology after several moves and colleges, one in Art Education. My experience as a...

I love this AnnaJo~ You are so talented to be able to see something and paint it. I like being able to see, what you are "seeing" and painting. This is so enjoyable to see your work in progress, or I guess it is done! It would be nice to see you in a painting too! Anyways, thanks for your visits and votes. I've been under the weather, and haven't had a chance to do my usually visit and voting. I wonder what I would feel like if I was "OVER" the weather.. that's a strange expression. "Under the weather"... hehe.. I like your new squirrel paintings too. His expressions make me smile and laugh.. I wish you could paint this new squirrel that hangs on the window sill over here. He's a real character. I've tried to get a picture of him, but he's too fast. FV
AnnaJo Vahle replied:
Thank you, Kym. This is an incomplete painting. It took me a couple of afternoons to complete it, which meant that I had a couple days to relax and enjoy the experience.

I am sorry to learn that you haven't been well, Kym. LOL…it is a strange expression! I hadn't really thought of it. I hope that you continue to feel better.

What a great idea for presentation! Can't wait to see the finished product. I really appreciate seeing through your (experienced) artist eye as well. Thank you so much!
AnnaJo Vahle replied:
Thank you, Catherine. Since I was sitting in the tailgate of my van...it was a bit difficult to get the exact same angle as I saw it. I had to lean way back through my van to get the painting in the shot.

Neat image! Love the concept of making art out of making art. It's a cool tree too.
AnnaJo Vahle replied:
Thank you very much, Daniel.

I love branches toward the sky :) I love poetry.. so I fell here ... F/V
AnnaJo Vahle replied:
Just returned from painting there again a few minutes ago. Poured rain. Lots of thunder and lightning. Several squirrels ran by my feet to hide in the hole of the tree! Very cool. Thank you for your visit, kind words and f/v, Alessandro.
