Artist's Description
The first day that we went to the Butterfly Rainforest in Gainesville, Florida, was an overcast cloudy cool day. Most of the butterflies had their wings closed. Most of them were not flying around.
We returned the following day and had better luck. The sun was out and the weather much warmer. Many butterflies were floating and flitting about in and out of the sunlight.
This is the underside of one that I saw. It was on a pretty yellow flower. I ducked down low so that I could get it at this angle. I liked that it looked like it was holding a single flower bouquet. The yellow was so pretty agains the reddish brown of the underside of its wings.
Rusty-tipped Page (siproeta epaphus), also known as the Brown Siproeta. It is a new world butterfly that lives all year in tropical habitats. Although born in upstate New York, I grew up mostly in Nevada and California. The fabulous panoramic views of the far west inspired me to begin painting and photographing it’s beauty. I’ve lived in various areas in the states and in Europe but always had the desire to express through painting and photography. While living in the Mediterranean, I was especially influenced by the great Renaissance art and the chiaroscuro work of Caravaggio. I began with oils, worked with a wide variety of mediums but now mostly work in acrylic, oils, and photography.
