Description
IWhile I doing some dusting, I realized that I hadn't photographed this painting. Nor had I posted this to my web site. I painted this watercolor painting on a 19 inch by 13 inch piece of heavy duty watercolor paper. I painted this en plein air at KARS Park on Merritt Island. Kennedy Athletic, Recreation & Social Park is about two miles from my house on Merritt Island Florida. It is five miles from Kennedy Space Center.
I neglected to put the date on this. I believe that it was in the mid 1980's. I knew that there was a launch scheduled for the Space Shuttle. I had been doing some paintings at the park around that time. Because I once had a badge for KSC since I worked as a Technical Illustrator and Drafter for the Space Program, I was allowed access to this park. It was a good location to watch the various rocket launches from Kennedy Space Center in Central Florida. I took my kids there with me. They played in the playground while I took up a seat on the pier and painted.
As I painted, I notices a great blue heron was sitting atop one of the piers. Just as the Shuttle roared throatily and lifted into the skies, the heron launched too. I had to include it in the scene. I loved the interplay of the peaceful beautiful natural scene with the high technology of mankind.
It had been a nice peaceful morning interupted by a bit of excitement. It was also an historic moment shared with my young sons. You can see the shuttle on the right side of the sky.

Great story though I can't see the rocket launch in this photo... L/F/Voted

I understand that it might be difficult to recognize. If you look carefully to the middle right side of the sky, you can see a small hotdog-like shape with a slight contrail of white. Thanks for visiting and commenting.
