Description
Many years ago I made this print. The carving is 15 1/8 inches by 9 1/8 inches but the printed image is a little larger. This is the first of 25. I carved the wood frame from my old waterbed. The wood was walnut and I planned to do something creative with it. I drew the design based on some paintings that I had done. You can see several watercolors of this scene based on a beached boat in Cocoa Beach, Florida. I used a gouge and a dremel to carve the image. I integrated the grain of the wood into the design. My young son helped me to finish out some of the lines in the water. He thought that the dremel was fun. I did too. It was rather slow work, though.
This is from the description of a couple of my watercolors depicting the same subject:
A big storm lashed Cocoa Beach, Florida. A fishing boat from Port Canaveral couldn't quite make it back to port. She had been out to sea and was on her way back when she lost power. Port Canaveral is the neighboring city north of Cocoa Beach. She drifted helplessly in the storm. As you can see from this painting, it ran aground and tipped over a little. All the fisherman made it to land safely. She stayed there for a few days before it was finally removed.
The American Flag waves in the breeze from the mast on the boat. An anchor hangs uselessly in the air as the boat is obviously not going anyway without assistance. Each day, the boat became ravaged by people retrieving souvenirs and by the wind, rain, and water. I think that it was there about a week before it was declared an eye-sore and a hazard. There wasn't much left of it before it was hauled away in pieces. I was saddened by the end of somebody's dream and of the boat.

Gorgeous carving, AnnaJo. I love how you repurposed your waterbed frame. When I built our retirement home (staying with our best friends) across the Meadow...we would venture up at days end...Joe would trash pick salvageable pieces of header board, beam cutoffs, 2’x4”s etc...and he made wide based stepstools for my closets ...with inlaid Fleurs de Lis...my favorites. There is something about transforming the leavings into treasures!! You did an amazing job on this woodcarving. LF
AnnaJo Vahle replied:
Oh my, Laurel, I bet those handmade works of art by Joe were beautiful. It is fun to repurpose things, indeed.

Nice print. This is what people use to mean by print. For years people thought reproductions were original art. Because they had heard the term of print meaning original art as a process (lithograph, silkscreen, etching, woodcut) and that term started being used for reproductions. I love real prints. Wonderful process.
AnnaJo Vahle replied:
Thank you very much, Barbara. That term, "print" has certainly come to mean something different.
