Description
This is a little plein air painting I did of our house when we lived in Dahlgren, Virginia. I painted it while sitting beneath one of the many big pine trees in the front yard. My second son was born while we resided here. My oldest son sat beside me and played with his little match box cars while I painted. My husband was in the Navy. This was the one and only time I actually lived on a military base.
According to Wikipedia, Dalgren is a census-designated place in King George County, Virginia, United States. The community is located within the Northern Neck George Washington Birthplace American viticultural Area winemaking appellation established by the United States government.
Since 1918, Dahlgren has been the site of a U.S. Naval base named for Rear Admiral John A. Dahlgren. When we lived there, it was called the Naval surface Weapons Center. The U.S. Naval Space Surveillance Systems command was located there at the time, too. It has a total area of 1.1 square miles. It is a small quiet and pretty community not too far from Washington D.C.
I used to take long bicycle rides with my two little sons along the Potomac river. Dahlgren is on the shore of the Potomac River.
It had a bedroom community feeling to it. A nice big golf course ran through it. We all had large yards and big gardens. Deer and other wildlife roamed casually through the neighborhood. The deer and rabbits loved to steal my garden harvest the day before I intended to pick the vegetables. I believe that there were only about 400 houses there. It was a pleasant place to raise a family out of the hubbub of all the surrounding cities. We only lived there a couple years.
