Description
This is a scene on the Indian River on Pine Island. I painted this en plein air in the middle of the summer last year. It was just a few weeks before the area was closed to the public as they built parking lots and delineated trails. This is a favorite spot for putting canoes and kayaks in the water. As I painted, I saw manatees stick their noses up above the water line for a breath of air. This is a favorite location for them. I noticed quite a group of them. I believe that they were having a slow naughty frolic.
This is in Brevard County, on the eastern shore of the Indian River Lagoon on north Merritt Island. It is just a couple miles south of the Kennedy Space Center. It is now a conservation area, which protects a variety of upland and wetland natural communities. This includes mesic pine flatwoods, cabbage palm hammocks and hardwood hammocks. Mangrove forests and high marshes fringe the Indian River Lagoon and the interior. It is interspersed with numerous open water ponds and creeks.
This particular spot is known as Sam's Creek. It is near Sam's Cabin. The West Indian manatee is frequently seen resting in the sheltered waters. The upland, wetland and shoreline habitats draw a variety of wading birds, shorebirds, waterfowl, raptors and migratory songbirds. Other wildlife observed here include bottlenose dolphin, otter, alligator, gopher tortoise and bobcat. I have seen all of these critters here at various times.
This particular afternoon was very hot as it was the end of summer. I saw a snake as it emerged from beneath the mangrove tree a few feet in front of me. The clouds mimicked the shapes of the mangroves. They bubbled up in the sky and turned dark before dropping their burden of rain. This is a typical summer day in Merritt Island. Of course, as it rained, I put away my painting supplies, closed up the tailgate to the van and headed home.
