Description
I recently came across this oil painting that I painted on stretched canvas 46 years ago while I was living in Sicily, Italy. I was teaching myself to paint in those days. I didn't really speak Italian very well at the time. The little art supply store in Catania, Sicily, didn't have any supplies in English. The paints and almost everything else were in various languages that I didn't understand. It was a bit frustrating. Even so...I kept on painting. I slowly began to figure things out.
I began this painting en plein air on site near Agrigento, Sicily. I finished it at my home on the side of Mt. Etna near a little town named Malta.
The name of this Greek ruin is the Temple of Dioscuri. It originally had 6 columns on each facade and 13 along the longer sides. The Doric temple was built between 480 and 460 BCE.
Castor and Pollux (the Dioscuri) are figures from Greek and Roman mythology considered the twin sons of Zeus or Jupiter. Semi-divine figures, the twins were credited with the role of saving those in trouble at sea or in grave danger in war. They were particularly associated with horses and sports.
The Dioscuri, known to the Greeks as Kastor and Polydeukes, were linked with Sparta especially and had their own temples in Athens and on Delos. The Dioscuri continued to be important in the Roman republic period and were the patrons of the Roman knights. Castor and Pollux played an important role in martial ceremonies into the Roman imperial period.
It is 64.5 cm by 50 cm or 25.2” by 19.69”.
