Description
Our mother had just died. My brother had a number of other bad issues to deal with too. We all did. My brother's name is Royal. I enjoyed playing a little word game in the title with his name. He and I leaned on each other pretty heavily as we tried to help each other through a series of life-changing events. Few of them seemed positive. One way that I handle situations, is to express my feelings through my artwork.
He was notifying a friend of his about our mother. The call didn't go as he had hoped. He sat outdoors in the front yard of our mother's townhouse on an old bench. Light and shadows moved about causing interesting patterns. The light and shadows seemed to be a great way to express the moods that he was going through. Lots of shadows fill the scene with light trying to filter in.
As an artist, I found the different textures an added challenge to showing the shadows. I kept thinking that it might have been easier in a different medium. This is an all acrylic painting on stretched canvas. I enjoy the challenge of this fast-drying paint.
The lights and shadows on his straw hat were especially challenging. The yard was covered with fallen leaves and mulch or irregular shapes. I liked the way the warm colors complimented the cooler shadows of the house behind him.
This is in Southern Florida during the Spring. The light was still a bit cool for that area but not cold as you can see by the clothing that Royal is wearing. For those of us, who live in Florida, it seemed like a coolish but beautiful day despite the sad situations were were confronting.

Annajo, thank you so much for your generosity in expressing Emotionalism both thru your brush and expanded contest blog shares. I love your portfolio, your descriptions and these even deeper shares which certainly give me and, I suspect, others the courage to find …a voice!
