Description
This was the view from one of my favorite seafood restaurants when I lived in Sicily. I loved smelling the fresh salt air as we enjoyed delicious meals. I came across this old oil painting that I did in 1976. I lived on the slopes of Mt. Etna at the time.
The Rocks of Cyclops are a group of eight volcanic basalt rocks that protrude from the sea in Aci Trezza, Sicily.
Aci Trezza is a fishing village on the east coast of Sicily, north of Catania. According to local legend, the rocks were thrown into the sea by Cyclops Polyphemus. In the Odyssey, Polyphemus was blinded by Ulysses and threw rocks from Mount Etna at Ulysses and his men. The cyclops were a race of giants in Greek and Roman mythology. They had a single eye in the center of their forehead and lived in caves high in the mountains of Sicily. The rocks were formed about half a mullion years ago as a result of volcanic activity. They were most likely originally attached to the Sicilian coast.
