I painted this on location first thing in the morning on New Year's Day. It was a typical scene in the area and I liked that aspect of it. It was foggy. The background was muted and soft. My heart was troubled as I painted. The painting seemed rather dull and drab just as my mood had been. I set it aside for awhile and looked at it again with new eyes. "It needed to be brightened", I thought. I needed to let go of what was bothering me. I kept adding colors and still it didn't seem to express what I wanted. I decided to move the sun and instead of it being a sunrise, it is now a sunset. I was setting aside my pain. Wanting to be faithful to the subject and the place, I actually, moved all the shadows from one side of everything to the other. I had seen this sunset in this location many times. It brightened everything and made my heart feel better. The great blue herons are building a nest in the top of a cabbage palm tree. The male is carrying a stick in his beak to add to the nest. His mate stands ready and happy to see him with his gift for their new home. Many of the surrounding trees have lost their fronds because of previous years of nests. A little sora rail hides among the reeds. A family of anhingas have moved into the short squat booted remains of another palm tree. Everything is reflected in the relatively smooth water. I left the fog in the background. It seemed to soften things. The Viera Wetlands has become a favorite location for birders. This ordinary scene might show you why. It is very much Florida.
