Description
Franky is on the left and Marcus is on the right. They have been together for three years. Marcus is my son. He is the one with the tattoos. I based this painting on a photograph I took of them at the Brevard Zoo. It is in Melbourne, Florida.
They didn't know that I did this painting. I gave it as a surprise gift for their wedding. I deliberately made the background vague. I wanted it to indicate that they are walking into the future together. It is an unknown future since most of them are. I didn't think that it was right of me to define what their future might be. I intended this to be foggy and mysterious.
They are walking away from me. That particular symbolism makes me both sad and pleased. As a mother, I hate to see my son go. On the other hand, I am happy that he has found someone to love. I am happy that he has found happiness and is doing well.
They are in step together, striding into the future. They are holding hands, which is, of course, a symbol of their love and affection. Although, they are each dressed casually in shorts, they are dressed differently. They are a couple and still have unique personalities.
I finally gave it to my son today. They got married a few days ago out of state. I didn't want to put this up until I gave it to them.

This painting and the story behind it really moved me a lot AnnaJo!! it is so wonderful to see artist honoring this unconditional love, particularly from the mother. love is love. and your love and thoughtfulness to your son is truly touching. i was legally married with my partner in 2012, still married today and have been together for 11 years. This is the most beautiful art since this was painted with love from the heart. i am sure your sons will love and treasure it always!! L/F

The story caught me AnnaJo! and I know how you feel as I am a mother myself. Watching our babies grow up to be men and then letting go the first time is the hardest...Thereafter it becomes easier and it's a gentle release taking its course and time...I realise it's only when we love that we let go cos we want them to be Happy. This work is so full of meaning and so precious! F/V
AnnaJo Vahle replied:
Thank you so much Belinda. Yes, it is hard to let your loved ones go…but it is the way life works. I am so happy that he is so happy.
