Description
We recently visited a good friend, who lives in Murphy, North Carolina. While there, I saw some paintings that I had given her years ago after previous visits to the area. This is one of my paintings that I did of a waterfall that we saw in the Nantahala Gorge. During this visit, as in the past, we explored the beauty of Nantahala National Forest. I always get excited about all the beauty and ideas for paintings.
This particular painting is in acrylic on stretched 24 inch by 30 inch canvas. I enjoyed the challenge of depicting the mossy rocks and falling water. A shaft of sunlight breaks through the dense forest canopy of trees around the spot.
The fresh air was invigorating. Sharing the experience with my children and my good friend made for a most delightful experience.
Nantahala, in the Cherokee language, means "Land of the Noon-day Sun." Over the course of centuries, the river here has carved out an eight-mile gorge that is so deep that many parts of it see direct sunlight for only a short time each day. Year-round whitewater recreation is a by-product of dam-controlled power generation by Duke Energy.
The Nantahala River and its gorge are part of the Mountain Waters National Scenic Byway, a spectacular journey along paved roads that crosses nearly the breadth of Western North Carolina. The scenic drive takes you through the Upper Nantahala River Gorge, a much narrower gorge of rushing white waters and numerous waterfalls on the river and showering down the walls of the narrow Upper Nantahala River Gorge. Some of these high waterfalls are more visible during Spring, Fall, and Winter seasons. Toward the end of the Upper Nantahala Gorge along an unpaved forestry on the west side of the gorge are even more waterfalls flowing down the Upper Nantahala River. Continuing further up the paved Mountain Waters National Scenic Byway you’ll past Nantahala Lake cross over mountaintops, across valleys up another canyon gorge and pass even more spectacular waterfalls. That’s journey the Highlander’s Scenic Highlander Tours will take you, on a longer journey and another time.
The Nantahala National Forest was established in 1920 under the authority of the 1911 Weeks Act and is now an assorted collection of noncontiguous protected land. The 1911 Weeks Act provided authority to acquire lands for national forests to protect watersheds, to provide timber, and to regulate the flow of maneuverable streams. It is the largest of four forests in North Carolina. This forest consists of 100 different species of trees. The forest covers 531,148 acres with elevations ranging from 5,800 feet in Jackson County to 1,200 feet in Cherokee County covering much of the western tip of the state. A part of the Appalachian Trail is in this forest where a lot of people hike. We hiked a small part of it, ourselves.
