Description
A friend and I went to the Florida Museum of Natural History's Butterfly Rainforest in Gainesville a few years ago. I took several photos of these beautiful little creatures while there.
These two butterflies landed on a little group of red flowers in front of me. They seemed so delicate and looked like stained glass windows. This seemed particularly true with the light shining through their wings.
The butterflies in the genus Idea are sometimes called Paper Butterflies or Tree Nymphs, because of their delicate, translucent wings. They boast a distinctive, graphic patterned appearance, veined and spotted with black markings, as well as a corresponding level of toxicity and unpleasant taste- all features that help to deter predators. They have a characteristic gentle, unrushed gait during flight, implicative of negligible fear of predators. Idea leuconoe is a large (4.7-6.1 inches) fairly common species across Southeast Asia, ranging from Myanmar to Malaysia, to the Philippines, and can most often be found in lowland rainforest areas basking in the sun with their wings outstretched.
