Description
I did this painting several years ago. I was commissioned by the office staff of my doctor. They wanted to give him something special for his birthday. He had just built a beautiful home on Merritt Island. He and I were friends. It was pleasant and peaceful for me to sit out in his backyard and paint the view. I did several plein air paintings of various aspects and views over the years in his backyard. In fact, after I completed this painting, he asked to switch it out with another painting that I had done from a few feet away where I had painted this. The one that he preferred was smaller. It was 20 inches wide and 16 inches tall. It was a close-up of some mangrove roots on the shore of the Banana River.
This panorama is a diptych. It consists of two 30 inch by 40 inch stretched canvasses. Side by side, that makes it's dimensions 30 inches by 80 inches. I laid the canvasses on the ground in front of me while I was painting. I crawled around them to reach everything. As I began, I tried to depict the sunrise. Various birds and critters came and went while I sat quietly painting. I kept making those changes in the painting. For instance, an osprey sat down on the roots of an overturned tree and watched me. I put him in the painting, too. When he flew away and a great blue heron took over his perch, I painted out the osprey and put in the heron.
I kept changing the light as it changed throughout the day. I moved the shadows from one side of the trees to the other as the day progressed. I did the same silly thing with the tide. I kept thinking that the changes were better than what I began with. I was sunburned and windburned by the time that it was too dark for me to paint any more. The doctor had to soothe my burns.

This is a lovely painting, AnnaJo! Despite all your changes it turned out beautifully! You must paint really fast- I could never do 2 paintings that large in one day! LF

I was frantic and obsessed. I started as soon as the sun rose and never took a break until the sun set. I put the last few touches after it was getting dark.

Very beautiful AnnaJo! I love the colors in the water! l/f
AnnaJo Vahle replied:
Thank you Linda. Those colors were as accurate as I could make them. That is one of the reasons I kept changing things as the day progressed.
