Description
Three toms and a little boy.
Every once in a while I have seen wild turkeys around Central Florida. I wanted to do a painting of them. My ineptitude kept me from successfully photographing wild turkeys each time that I actually saw them in the wild. Once I forget to turn on the camera before they flew away. Another time, I took too long to put on the proper lens before they walked away. Early this year before the quarantine, I spent a week at Disney World in Orlando with friends. While having breakfast one overcast morning, we saw several wild turkeys walk by. I hurried out and captured several views of them with my I-phone. Not the best photos, but good enough for me to compose this painting. I finally photographed my wild turkeys even if It was in an unusual setting!
The little boy was watching me and was delighted to see what I was seeing. We shared a moment. We were enjoying the unusual sight.
The colors throughout the scene are not accurate. I enjoy colors and changed the colors of the drapes.
I don't know the story of why there were wild turkeys strolling about the grounds at the Disney resort. It is amazing to see the many types of feathers and all the beautiful colors they have.
I found out some facts. A gobbler or tom turkey is a mature male bird. There will be shifts in physical appearance and behavior as they get older, but a gobbler is essentially a gobbler on its 2 year birthday.
A jake is an immature male bird. Generally, people define a jake turkey as a one-year-old bird. They can also sometimes be confused with hens in the field.
As a general rule, jakes will have short beards (about 2 to 3 inches in length), while the tom turkey beard can be up to 10 inches or more (they don't call them longbeards for nothing). Sometimes toms even get multiple beards, which can be another good sin of maturity. On the other hand, sometimes toms lose their beards or wear them down over time, or jakes will sport long or double beards. A certain number of hens will also sport a beard at some point, which is why many regulations allow a “bearded turkey” during the turkey hunting season.
Yes...it is all confusing to me.
