Description
I used to hike off-road areas much more than I do these days. I often carried my camera and/or my paints to various wild places. I spent all day oftentimes by myself with only the wildlife to keep me company. It was always good for my emotional and physical health. Long before I was properly diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, I discovered that long walks and or hikes seemed to help me forget my incessant vertigo and scattered thinking. All my problems dropped away. I submersed myself in the world of nature. I looked at the world through the eyes of an artist. I mean that everything seemed to be a subject for a painting or a photograph.
I discovered Moccasin Island by happen-chance as I drove down a dirt road near Melbourne, Florida. This is a painting of that road.
One day, I hiked along the trails and paths towards Moccasin Island in the St. John's River. It was a hot dry summer day. Most of the hike was about pushing through the tall grass and bushes. But towards the end, I made it to the shores of the river. There were beautiful trees there. Lots of mucky areas where some sleepy alligators lolled peacefully. I gave them a wide berth and they left me alone. Quite a few deer quietly grazed beneath the gnarled tree boughs. Of course, the oak trees were interspersed with many varieties of palm trees with their spiky fronds. I saw a few bald eagles nearby with nests high in the pine trees. I could hear them calling to each other high in the sky. I listened to the mockingbirds, meadow larks, and cardinals singing there pretty songs. An idyllic and beautiful place to be in this troubled world.
