Description
I painted this surreal landscape in oil on canvas as entertainment at a party when I was a teenager. I was living in California at the time. Shared a home with some friends while I was attending college. It was a really foggy evening. We called it tulle fog. Not exactly sure why but it is a common phenomenon around the central valley. It is so quiet and isolating during those pea-soup fog enshrouded evenings. I hoped to express the feeling that we all felt being out in the country surrounded by the quiet mist. It seemed as if we were the only people in the world.
It wasn't safe for anyone to drive. We had some house guest that asked me to watch me paint. I was a bit nervous about painting before an audience then, but I was among friends. I just kinda let go and let the paints talk.
“Dropping Out” was a popular idea in the sixties and seventies. I guess that is kinda what I was thinking of when I painted the capsule of some mysterious liquid in the foreground. We thought about the fence being a negative element and made more beautiful by decorating it with a flower. I was enamored with bare trees in those days. I always had at least one tree without leaves in all my landscapes.

AnnaJo - I was looking at this image from the thumprints and the fence looked like the skeletal remains of an animal which only added to the bleakness. Oh gosh, my imagination was sparked. Good one!!!! Best, Marie
