Description
I have spent a lot of time at this beautiful location over the years. It is part of the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge in Central Florida. It is next to Kennedy Space Center. This particular spot is where the marshy wetlands change to pine flatwoods. This area, where two or more habitats meet, is called an ecotone. The adjoining habitats provide wildlife easier access to resources. A great example of an ecotone on the Refuge is the pine flatwood habitat which provides bald eagle nesting area, while the adjacent lagoon provides its hunting grounds. In fact, if you look carefully, you might see the bald eagle sitting on a limb looking down to the lagoon. You might notice another critter, who shares the premises. Alligators are prevalent there.
I based this 30” by 40” acrylic painting on several photographs that I have taken over the years. I didn't really mean to get so detailed but as I painted, I got lost in the project and kept adding details. It was therapeutic for me to paint a location that has given me so much peace and healing over the years.
