Title
Onions and Garlic on Burlap
Artist
AnnaJo Vahle
Medium
Painting - Acrylic On Burlap
Description
This is my second painting on stretched burlap instead of tradition canvas or linen. It is a 9 inch by 12 inch acrylic painting. I used gesso beneath the painted areas because the weave was too open to properly hold any paint. This created a rough texture that absorbed the paint thirstily. I allowed the outer edges to remain natural. This adds to the rustic appearance.
We are in quarantine at home because of COVID19 pandemic. I have wanted to get out to do some plein air painting. That being unwise for the time being, I have been doing some al fresco paintings in the home. I set out some onions and garlic on the table next to my easel. I just dove it without any preliminary drawing just like I did the last several times.
I have been dealing with a bit of a handicap lately. I just had cataract surgery a couple weeks ago. My vision is still impaired since I still have a cataract in the other eye. My brain hasn't adapted to my new lens. I am curious to see how this will eventually affect my painting. Currently I see two kinds of colors. If I look only through my right eye I see things a bit drab and brownish. If I look through my left with the clear new lens, the colors are brighter. It is weird. I sense that using my eyes like this without any glasses is helping me to heal more quickly. I really don't know it this is true.
I used a loose expressionistic style. I found the painting a fun and challenging experience. It was relaxing to play with trying to express the various subtle colors. I enjoyed emulating the textures, too. I signed it a couple hours ago.
This might be a good decoration in a dining room or kitchen. It looks nice on a tote bag.
