Description
We are still mostly staying at home due to the COVID29 quarantine. Wanting to do some paintings from life, still lifes seem to be taking care of this itch. We are fortunate in that we have some good friends down the street with a garden. They have been kindly providing us with some of their fresh tomatoes. We are especially fond of Caprese Salad. That is a simple salad of tomatoes, mozzarella cheese and balsamic vinegar. This is my second painting with these tomatoes the star of the composition. This painting is in different dimensions and composition. I kept to a very limited palette this time. I stayed with earth colors in an effort to cause the bright reds of the tomatoes to pop out. I set the tomatoes in a bowl on the wooden table next to my easel. I am using natural light that comes through glass sliding glass doors a couple feet away. The lighting is relatively soft as a result.
I didn't really have a wooden cutting board but thought that it would enhance my composition. I made it up and stuck to the same colors that I used for the table and knife handle. I cut up some of the tomatoes and cheese to incorporate the colors throughout the set up.
The white mozzarella cheese seemed awfully loud, so I softened the garishness of it by warming it up with the same warm color that I used for the wood. I added just a bit of purple to help the warm white seem a bit more harmonious. I added the bottle in the background to improve the eye flow of the composition. The white label seemed to balance out the whites of the cheese on the right side of the painting.
This is a 12 inch by 16 inch stretched canvas. I used acrylic paints in a loose brushy style. Everything about creating this little painting was therapeutic. I forgot about the virus throughout the world. It took a couple hours to create this en plein air or al fresco. After completing this...we ate the salad, of course.. Delicious!

AnnaJo, I have read your description for this picture. Although it was obviously born under difficult circumstances, it has become a wonderful still life that can stand beautifully on its own. I really like it and I would love to eat the little pieces, my mouth is already watering. Really superb work! F
