Description
This 16” by 20” acrylic painting on stretched canvas was mostly painted en plein air. I couldn't finish it on location that first day and set it aside to resume another day. It has been a few years and I just finally completed it. I went back to the original location. Everything has changed. The house has deteriorated quite a bit since I began the painting. I decided to use my artistic license and finish it with my imagination. This way I wasn't constrained by reality and had fun punching up the colors.
This is the second painting that I have done of this very old house on Tropical Trail, Merritt Island, Florida. The first one is titled, “When the Cow came Home.” I described in the accompanying description how I met the owner while I was painting on location. He gave me permission and encouraged me to go anywhere on his property to do other paintings. The first painting shows the front of the house. For this one, I went out back and did the back and side of the house. He explained that it was very very old. I was told that it should be declared an historical landmark but the paperwork hasn't been done. I am afraid that it won't ever be done before the old house is totally ruined.
I was essentially fairly faithful about recording the scene as I originally saw it. As I have already indicated, I decided to be a little playful with the colors. They are a bit more impressionistic and expressionistic. I added a path in the foreground to lead the eye into the composition. I hope the do another painting of it from a third angle some day. It is definitely falling apart at an alarming rate. It is historical to Merritt Island. I have heard that it is one of the first homes built on the island.
I have been dealing with an exacerbation of multiple sclerosis. We are in the midst of the covid 19 pandemic. These are some of the reasons that I decided to finish it it at home instead of on location.
