Description
When I first moved to Merritt Island, I took my sons to a nearby farm field. While they chased each other around and explored the various little barns and sheds, I did this acrylic painting. I painted it alla prima en plein air. (Is that the correct way to say that? I mean...I am using two languages in the same sentence.) In English...I painted it all at once on the spot. I used to see old tractors parked beneath that reddish metal roof.
About a year after I did this painting, I saw that the big oak tree had fallen over during a hurricane. It had gone through the roof of the big shed. They tore down the shed but pushed the tree back to an upright position. It recovered, much to my amazement. It thrived for another six years before it fell over during another big storm. It lay on the ground for several months before they finally removed it. It made me rather sad.
There were several old barns and sheds on the property. I did paintings of them all eventually. Now, only one old barn is left. This property is on North Tropical Trail. I have done painting of many locations on that old Florida road.
My sons, who were very young at the time, were used to watching me paint. My eldest son now goes out by himself and sketches from time to time. It was a pleasant way to spend time with my little boys. It was healing for me to be out in the fresh air and to create. Good for all of us mentally and physically.
