Description
As a typical summer day in Central Florida, it was warm and rainy. I parked my van out in the middle of a field that had been an orange grove not too long ago. Now it is a grassy field with stumps. It is about a mile from my neighborhood. Sitting in the tailgate, I was just beginning to paint in the gray sky when it began to rain in ernest. I closed up my easel and threw it quickly in the van and went home without having accomplished much of anything.
The following day, I actually was able to get some serious painting done even as various passers-by stopped to comment on my work. A neighbor asked if I knew the story of the house. I didn't and asked what it was. He answered that it was very very old before he hurried off. Another man stopped by. He asked me the same question. I responded as I had before. He explained that it was very very old and that his brother-in-law owned it. It should be declared an historical landmark but the paperwork hasn't been done.
Occasionally, I had to spray my feet with insect repellant. Fire ants kept chowing down upon my poor sunburned feet. While I was painting in the middle ground, it happened!
Yes, a cow came home! A big black cow came from around behind the house and stood staring at me for a long time. Just as I was about to paint her that way, she lay down in front of the house but behind the old fence. I painted her as I saw her. I couldn't see her details. She was just a big black beast.
At that point, another man came by. He asked me if I knew anything about the house. Again, I answered, that I didn't. I added that I would like to know it, if he could tell me. He said that it was his house and that it was very very old. He happily noted that I had included his cow. Before I could ask him anymore, he ran off.
I was fairly faithful about recording the scene as I saw it. The sky kept clouding up and the setting sun sparkled through the clouds from time to time lighting up various elements. The actual road is paved and runs from one side of the scene to the other, along the front of the house. I noticed the gate and thought the composition would be improved if I changed the road to a dirt path and had it leading to the old broken down gate. It looked to me as if it must have been that way at one time. If not, I made it so anyway.

Thank you so much, Dagmar. I agree that painting outdoors is often an adventure. I think that is one of the primary reasons that I enjoy it.

This just screams Florida! You really captured the atmosphere of the state. Wonderful painting and I love the way the palms turned out. f/v
AnnaJo Vahle replied:
Thank you, Daniel. I take that as a great compliment. I used to find palm trees an intimidating subject. Now that I understand that they can be so totally different from each other, I find them a fun challenge.
