Description
I think that I am done with this painting. I signed it three days ago. Even so, I keep noodling around and changing things. I have been working on it for the past couple weeks. I haven't been working on it regularly at all. I have just doodled with it from time to time. I posted this to my web site a couple weeks ago as an incomplete painting. I entered it in a contest for works in progress.
There were periods when it felt like it was going well. However, much of the time, I struggled. I couldn't quite get it to work. I hoped to show the light flickering through the leaves of the red mangrove trees.
I added an alligator to liven things up. After that, it seemed like it need something in the trees. I painted a beautiful great white egret sitting on a large nest. I spent a fair amount of time getting it to glow. It did but that took over the whole painting and that wasn't the effect that I was after. I painted it out. Once it was gone, the painting kept telling me that I needed something more. I moved some of the trees and painted some of them out. I added sky holes in the foliage, I added and took away various branches, leaves and limbs. Then I removed much of the water because I thought that it crowded the alligator. The tide went in and out a couple of times. I changed the hues of the water, too. Why not? I kept changing everything. The paint piled up in thick globs. That made it more difficult to paint any details Sigh. This painting has been a difficult one for me.
The basic premise for this is that it is a place where I have done several plein air paintings. I used to sit where the alligator is. I later learned that this particular gator was known as Big Bertha. One of the reasons that I put in the little blue heron was to give the alligator some scale. I hoped to show that she was huge. I have actually seen little blue herons in the area.
It is on a 30 inch by 40 inch stretched premium linen.

So well done, AnnaJo! I So well understand the feeling... Some paintings are" painting themselves, while others take forever to paint, still leaving you exhausted

L/F/Voted for this version of Big Bertha... I cannot even believe you would paint anywhere near an alligator!
AnnaJo Vahle replied:
Thank you very much Catherine. I didn't know that a gator was there for quite a long time. There are a lot of them around.
