Description
I am currently working on this acrylic painting. It is on a 30 inch by 40 inch stretched canvas. I am making this up for the most part. It is based on a place on the Banana River near Port Canaveral. I did a few plein air paintings from this exact location. We recently took a drive over there to see what it looks like now. My past paintings were of what could be seen looking out across the water towards Merritt Island in the east. This time I am trying to show the spot where I sat instead of the scene from there. I am hoping to show the sun light glowing through the leaves of the mangrove trees. It is the light that I am most interested in. I have been working on it for a few days now. It has been quite a challenge. I put a great white egret standing in it's nest up in the branches of the trees. Only after I had adjusted the limbs and branches to better accommodate the nest and had nearly completed the pretty bird, did I decide that it was all wrong. The bird was too big. It should have been on the outside of the tree canopy not the underside. Sadly, I painted it out. Then, I decided that an alligator might be a good idea. I am basing it on the fact that I know from a man, who works nearby, that there is an alligator nest there every year. He told me that he calls her Big Bertha. He claimed that she is about 18 feet long. He said that he has never seen an alligator as large as her in the wild. Soooo...as you can see, the alligator isn't quite right. I will probably change the colors. I need to move some of the branches in the trees for a better composition. I still have a long way to go.
This is an acrylic painting on a 30 " by 40" premium stretched linen. The watermark does not appear on prints.

I find mangrove trees and groves so intriguing! There is something mysterious about them. Love this!

AnnaJo, I love both versions…and am thoroughly enjoying your phases of development. I often follow a similar process, especially when painting from imagination…this one is all the more mysterious with the backstory…and I wish you had saved the phase with the great white before painting it out! Each must have had a different mystique…WONDERful!
AnnaJo Vahle replied:
Thank you, Laurel. As you must know now, I did, indeed, save a photo of that phase.
