Description
Out driving in the rain, we were stopped by this family crossing the road. This is not an uncommon occurrence around here. Many of the communities and roads are named after the cranes. To be specific, these are sandhill cranes. At one time they were seriously endangered. Because of the various rules and protections put into place, they are now doing quite well.
As you can see, they are not particularly worried about people. They boldly step out into traffic and expect that the cars will stop for them. They usually do, fortunately. I always worry. We saw an adolescent sandhill crane get hit by a car and get its' wing broken. I called the rehabilitation people and they came immediately and rescued him. They took care of him until he healed properly before releasing him back to the wild.
I believe that this group of cranes is a family. As you can see, it is raining. They never seem to be in much of a hurry. They slowly and deliberately march across the road. Sigh. They aren't in a hurry and don't care if you might be. I guess that they are reminding us to be relax and take life in stride.
